From Inside to Out - A journey into the intelligence of life through the lens of immunology
About the Site
Inspired by the ecosystems within us, this space explores how mutualism, immune pattern recognition, and the ecology of the gut reveal deep principles that can guide not just health, but technology, culture, and consciousness.
By learning from the microbiome, evolution, and immune intelligence, we find new ways to understand neural networks, to build AI that aligns, and to design systems—human or artificial—that thrive through cooperation, not control.
Through essays, projects, and reflections, I share an interdisciplinary path shaped by science, movement, and the practice of living thoughtfully in a complex world.
This is where biological insight meets creative inquiry.
Welcome to the edge of inside.
About the Author
Duncan Sutherland PhD is an intestinal immunologist, father, founder, scientist, and writer exploring how the ecosystems within us shape the future of health and intelligence.
As the founder and CEO of Arkaiya and TwentyGreen, he collaborates internationally with leading clinicians and microbiome scientists to pioneer the role of archaea in human health—a microbial domain long overlooked due to the analytical and bioprocessing complexity required to reveal their function.
Inspired by his subject—the gut microbiome and the mucosal immune system—Duncan proposes a paradigm shift: that archaea are foundational symbionts of the human gut mucosa, mutualists essential not only for early-life development, mucosal integrity, and metabolic homeostasis, but also for maintaining function and longevity in adulthood.
He further proposes that this dynamic, co-evolved system can inspire how we design and engage with artificial intelligence—moving toward models guided by mutualism rather than parasitism, and fostering technologies that contribute to the integrity of the whole, rather than exploit it.
His work spans diagnostics, therapeutics, and the deeper philosophy of interdisciplinary design, calling for a shift in how we think, build, and collaborate—as individuals, teams, and civilizations—toward a more intelligent, responsive, and mutualistic superorganism.
At the ARK HIVE and TG-dō, you’ll find him building alongside collaborators, crafting ideas, and testing rhythms—from inside to out.
